Most wake-up advice assumes a fixed schedule and a body clock you can anchor. Shift work removes both, so a lot of the standard guidance simply does not apply. This page is what survives, organised by the shift you are actually working.
Start with the arithmetic
Enter your shift start and it gives you the alarm time, the leave-home time and the bedtime. Free, and nothing you type is sent anywhere.
The failure that is not oversleeping
Talk to enough shift workers and a pattern emerges: the alarm usually worked. What went wrong was that it was set for the wrong time, or the wrong day, or never set at all after the rota changed.
Set the alarm at the same moment you learn the shift. Not later, not when you get home, not at midnight when you are exhausted. This single habit prevents more missed shifts than any app feature, and it costs nothing.
Three things to check while you are there:
- am versus pm. Around night shifts a 6 could plausibly be either, and the mistake is invisible until it is not.
- The specific day. A weekday repeat does not cover a Saturday shift. Check the day you actually need, not the pattern in general.
- That it is enabled, rather than merely created. An alarm that exists but is toggled off is the most avoidable failure there is.

Early shifts
A 5 or 6 a.m. start is mostly an arithmetic problem plus a bedtime problem. The arithmetic is easy and people usually get it right. The bedtime is the part that quietly breaks.
For a 6 a.m. start with a twenty-minute commute, you are realistically waking at around 4:50 a.m. On an eight-hour sleep target that means lights out at about 8:35 p.m. Most people read that number and immediately know they will not do it — which is useful, because it means the hard morning was decided the previous evening, not by the alarm.
What helps, in rough order:
- Move the bedtime before you move the alarm. Everything else is downstream of this.
- Set out clothes, keys and bag the night before. Sleep inertia makes decisions expensive; remove the decisions.
- Phone across the room, on something hard. Louder and further away, and both help.
- Light immediately. Turn something bright on the moment you are up, rather than moving through a dark flat.
- One strong alarm, not six. A stack of alarms teaches you that the first few are negotiable. More on why multiple alarms don't work.

Night shifts, and sleeping in daylight
Waking for a night shift is rarely the hard part. Sleeping beforehand is. You are asking your body to sleep at the time it is most strongly signalling that it should be awake, in a house that is bright and noisy.
The things that make the biggest difference are environmental rather than clever:
- Darkness that is actually dark. Blackout blinds, or a proper eye mask. Half-dark is not the same thing.
- Noise that is predictable. Earplugs, or steady background sound. Unpredictable noise wakes people; constant noise mostly does not.
- A household that knows. Most daytime sleep is broken by someone who did not realise, not by the neighbours.
- Phone on Do Not Disturb, alarms still allowed. Focus modes silence notifications; they do not silence alarms.
For the alarm itself, the same rules apply as any other shift: across the room, one strong alarm, and something to do after you dismiss it.
Rotating shifts
Rotating patterns are the hardest case, because the advice that helps most people — a consistent wake time — is structurally unavailable to you. It is worth saying plainly: you are not failing at something you could be doing better. The thing that would help most is not on offer.
What is on offer:
- Anchor what you can. If some part of the routine can stay constant across shifts — the same wind-down, the same first ten minutes after waking — keep it constant, even when the times move.
- Re-derive the wake-up time every rota, not from memory. The commute at 5 a.m. and the commute at 2 p.m. are different journeys.
- Set every alarm for the block at once when the rota lands, rather than one at a time.
- Expect the first shift of a new pattern to be the worst one. Plan the buffer for that morning specifically.
The nap warning
This is the part with genuine clinical weight, so it gets its own section.
CDC guidance written for nurses working long hours warns specifically about sleep inertia after napping, because the impairment can be at its worst in the first 15 to 30 minutes after waking — which may be exactly when you are driving in or making clinical decisions.
Practical implications:
- Build buffer time after a nap before anything requiring judgement, including the drive.
- Set the nap alarm earlier than you need, so the buffer is inside your schedule rather than stolen from it.
- Light and movement immediately, since both shorten the fog.
- Do not rely on how alert you feel in that window. Feeling fine and being fine are different things during sleep inertia.

When this is worth raising with a doctor
Everything on this page assumes you are getting enough sleep and still struggling to wake. If you sleep a full night and still wake unrefreshed, feel sleepy during the day, or someone has told you that you snore loudly or stop breathing in your sleep, that is worth a GP appointment rather than another app. The NHS pages on excessive daytime sleepiness and sleep apnoea describe what to look for. By job
The underlying problem is the same everywhere, but the practical constraint differs.
Nurses and healthcare
Long shifts, safety-critical decisions early, and frequently a drive at the worst possible point of the inertia window. The nap warning above matters more here than anywhere else. Handover means the “be there early” number is real rather than optional, so put it in the calculation.
Factory, warehouse and logistics
Fixed clock-in times with little tolerance, often very early. The arithmetic matters most here: a five-minute error is the difference between fine and a formal conversation. Build the buffer in and treat it as untouchable.
Security and overnight staffing
Often the reverse problem — waking in the evening for a night that ends at dawn. The daylight-sleeping section above is the relevant one, and the household-awareness point does most of the work.
Drivers and transport
The one where sleep inertia is least negotiable, because the first task after waking is the safety-critical one. If you take nothing else from this page: do not shorten the gap between the alarm and the ignition to buy yourself more sleep. Move the bedtime instead.
Hospitality and retail
Irregular rather than rotating, often with the shift confirmed at short notice. That makes the “set it the moment you learn it” habit the single highest-value thing on this page, because the gap between learning and working can be very short.
Will the phone even ring?
Worth settling, because it is the most common misconception and it wastes worry that could go somewhere useful.
- Silent mode does not mute alarms. It never has. Alarms are exempt by design.
- Focus modes, including Sleep Focus, do not mute alarms either.
- A locked phone still rings, and so does one whose alarm app is closed, if it uses a real system alarm.
- Alarm volume is a separate slider under Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Ringtone and Alerts. The side buttons do not change it unless Change with Buttons is on.
- The surface matters more than people expect. A phone on a duvet is dramatically quieter than the same phone on wood.

The one-minute test
Before any shift you genuinely cannot miss, do this once:
- Set an alarm for one minute from now.
- Put the phone exactly where it will be overnight, on the surface it will actually be on.
- Walk away and let it ring all the way through without touching it.
- If you use a scan-to-dismiss app, walk to the scan item and scan it, in the light you will really have at that hour.
It catches volume problems, muffling, Bluetooth routing and permission problems in one go. A bathroom that is bright at 3 p.m. is a different proposition at 5 a.m., and that is exactly the sort of thing this finds.
What transfers from ordinary wake-up advice
- Phone across the room. Works regardless of schedule.
- Snooze at one minute. In iOS 26 this is per-alarm, which suits shift work well because you can differ by shift.
- A dismissal you cannot perform from bed, which matters more when you are sleeping at unusual times and your sleep pressure is high.
- Something after the dismissal, since relapse risk is higher when you are sleep-deprived, which shift workers usually are.
What does not transfer
- “Keep a consistent wake time.” You cannot. Do not treat it as a personal failure.
- Streak-based apps. Streaks assume a daily rhythm. With rotating shifts you will break them for reasons that have nothing to do with effort, which turns the motivator into a demotivator.
- Financial penalty apps. Betting money against the nights you had least control over is a poor deal on a rota. We say the same on our Nuj comparison.
- Sleep-tracking-first apps. They are built around a regular cycle. Useful data, wrong assumption.
Where to put the scan item on shift work
If you use an app that makes you scan something to dismiss the alarm, shift work changes the calculation slightly.
- Pick somewhere that works at every hour you might wake. A kitchen that is fine at 5 a.m. may have a sleeping housemate in it at 9 p.m.
- Do not pick anything that runs out. The most common quiet failure is that the toothpaste got replaced and the barcode changed. A printed QR code lasts indefinitely and you choose the spot.
- Backups in different rooms. A backup on the same shelf fails at the same moment the primary does.

Where Mornio fits, and where it does not

- Your phone cannot run iOS 26.1. There is no way around this.
