Nuj works. That is worth saying at the top, because pages like this usually start by rubbishing what you are leaving. If a financial penalty is what finally gets you upright, that is a legitimate solution and you should keep using it.

But there are reasonable reasons to want the same structure without the money, and they are not all squeamishness.

Why people want out of penalty alarms

What to replace it with, by what you valued

Closest structural match (ours)

Mornio, if you valued the get-up deadline

The thing that makes Nuj work is not really the money. It is that the alarm and the deadline are separate events, so dismissing the alarm does not end the obligation. Mornio copies that structure and changes the consequence: you scan your registered QR code or barcode to dismiss, then a few minutes later the stay-awake check asks you to confirm you are still up. Ignore it and protection restarts, so the alarm comes back.

The worst case is a more persistent morning rather than a smaller bank balance. No payment details, no account, nothing under Data Used to Track You. It requires iOS 26.1, which is the catch.

If you valued the barcode challenge

Alarmy or SuperAlarm

Both support barcode and QR scanning, and both reach far more iPhones than Mornio: Alarmy from iOS 16, SuperAlarm from iOS 17. Alarmy also offers a wake up check as a premium feature, and SuperAlarm's listing describes one too, so you can approximate the second checkpoint.

The trade is privacy and ads. Alarmy carries Apple's “Contains Advertising” note and declares Location under tracking; SuperAlarm sells a $2.99 monthly ad removal and also declares Location. Nuj declared nothing under tracking, so on that specific measure you would be going backwards.

If you valued the pressure itself

An accountability partner, or Erly

Erly builds streaks and a daily check-in, which is social-style pressure without money. It runs on iOS 17.6 and later. If what worked about Nuj was having something at stake, a streak is the nearest non-financial equivalent, though it declares Identifiers and Usage Data under tracking.

The lowest-tech option is telling one person you will message them at 6:30. It costs nothing and works better than most apps.

Before you switch

If Nuj is working and the penalties are rare, stay. A system that gets you up is worth more than a tidier privacy label. Switch if you are paying often, if your schedule makes the deadline unfair, or if handing over payment details for an alarm clock stopped feeling proportionate.

And if you are paying often, treat that as a signal. Frequent failure despite genuinely trying usually means not enough sleep, and occasionally something worth raising with a doctor. No alarm app, ours included, fixes a sleep deficit.
